Being from the south, I am big on tradtions. Many people have any different traditions, whether it's eating at the grandparents after church on Sundays or following in the footsteps of past generations and coming out at the debutant ball. I found a list on Pinterest of southern traditions to keep alive, and I would like to share them with you and some statements and stories about each.
1. Setting the table with real cloth napkins
Every Sunday after church when I was a little girl, we would go to my grandmother's house for lunch. It would never fail that we would have cloth napkins waitng at the table for us to use. It always made me feel fancy and classy getting to use the special napkins. Whenever I have my own home, I will most definitely use real cloth napkins.
2. Writing thank you notes
I don't know about you, but I always write thank you notes. I feel like it is just a necessity to thank the person or people that either gave you a gift, let you stay with them, or just did something nice. Of course you also have to have cute thank you notes! Thank you notes are one aspect of southern life that I will always keep in my life.
3. Saying sir and ma'am
Having good manners, in my opinion is the beys way to live. I have always and will always say sir and ma'am, even when I'm older. I feel that it is polite to address someone older then you as sir or ma'am.
4. Giving a stranger a helping hand
Being from the south you are always taught to be kind to others, no matter their circumstances. I feel like my heart is so big and I find so much joy in helping others because I am from the south. It's always a nice feeling to help others out when they are in a difficult spot.
5. Sitting on the porch and rocking for a spell
There is nothing like sitting on the porch watching the sun set while drinking sweet tea. There is something about just sitting still and staring at the peaceful sky, or talking to a
neighbor or friend you haven't seen in forever. Southerners are always looking for an excuse to talk!
6. Slow cooking all day long
I sure do love coming in from work and smelling that roast in the crockpot. Southerners are all about some quick cooking that will be ready when you get home. Whether it's a roast, chicken or chili it will always smell delicious when you walk in your house.
7. Setting out cheese straws and sweet tea for company
Personally I do not like cheese straws, but they are enjoyed through out the south. Now, sweet tea on the other hand is another story. I could drink sweet tea any time, anywhere! I really don't understand how anyone could not like sweet tea!
8. Quilting, crocheting
I am not a big quilter, but when I see them done they are quite beautiful! My grandmother would always make me something each year that she hand made. There is something about a handmade blanket, scarf or anything especially made for you!
9. Pears go with everything
I truly have to agree with this statement! I never go anywhere without my pearl earrings on! Put pearls with any outfit and it will be complete! Pearls are so classy and a classic piece of jewelry. My motto is you should dress where you want to be, not where you are! That advice was courtesy of my sweet boyfriend.
Being southern is a privilege and a state of mind, so no matter where you live you can always be in a southern state of mind.

I love this post! I have lived in Virginia my entire life. I may not have a thick southern accent, but my Grandmother and Moma have sure brought me up 8 of those 9 southern traditions (not the cloth napkins though, only for Christmas do we break those out). I have always said that one is "Southern by the Grace of God." And I am happy to say that I am Southern by the Grace of God. Loving the blog! Thanks for sharing!!!
